Muhammad Yusuf TarrStaff WriterThe extravagant promposal we “viralized” in a video of Jason Pitts’ invitation to Lianna Cohen in 2011 has become as much of an internal part of prom as the limousine and corsage.  And though prom comes early this year,  April 13, seniors: it is not too late to craft your own promposal by following these simple rules.

1. BE EMOTIONAL — On Feb. 1, the day of Alatorre’s last home soccer game of the season against long time rival Beverly Hills High, Salam thought it would be a cute idea to ask her to prom. He then went to a friend’s house and spent nearly three and a half hours completing a banner that said “Mikala, Prom?”
Alatorre appreciated the romantic spectacle, especially since she was already in an emotional state.
“When Aryan asked me to prom I almost peed my pants,” Alatorre said. “I knew I was already going to prom but the fact that he made that gesture made me happy.”
2. BE CREATIVE — Mickelson added a rebellious flare to his promposal for his girlfriend of six months, Rubin. Mickelson, assisted by good friend, Ryan Tepper (’13), was inspired to prompose in this manner by a hacked road sign that read “Zombies Ahead.” Mickelson and Tepper found a road sign near a local gas station, and made it read “Rochelle, prom?” Cami Speyer (’13), then drove with Rubin and pretended that she needed to fill up her gas tank. Little did Rubin know, Mickelson was hiding behind a gasoline pump.
“It took a second to process what the sign said and once I did, I couldn’t believe he had done that. I was so surprised and happy,” Rubin said.
3. BE UNEXPECTED — Jackson took a dangerous approach to asking his girlfriend Vanessa Alamillo (’13) by misleading her to believe that he would be attending the dance with someone else. His devious plan was to catch Alamillo by surprise in front of a grand audience. Jackson convinced Alamillo that he would attend prom with someone else, but was secretly planning with a few cheerleaders and Alamillo’s friends to ask Alamillo.
Alamillo’s friends made sure that she sat in the front row of the hyped basketball league game against Inglewood, and Jackson ran through the cheerleaders while they held up signs saying “Vanessa, prom?” Alamillo was overjoyed and glad that Jackson promposed to her at his big game.“Getting asked to prom then and there and then being able to watch him do his thing on the court was amazing,” Alamillo said.4. BE MUSICAL — Prada and Samo’s barbershop quartet asked Bang to prom in her California Literature class. Prada entered Jenna Gasparino’s classroom with Preston Searfoss (’13), Isaac Nemzer (’13), Spencer Gordon (’13) and Bret Hart (’13), Samo’s Barber Shop Quartet, and they serenaded Bang, singing “Amanda will you go with Tom to prom?” Bang did not realize that the quartet was for her until she saw Prada in a tuxedo. Once she realized, Bang was elated.“I was speechless, and my cheeks turned really red, too,” Bang said. “Tommy made me feel incredibly special on that day.” mytarr@thesamohi.com
