What's up, doc?
By FIONA MORIARTY-MCLAUGHLINIf there’s one shoe that’s seen it all, it’s Dr. Marten. Also known simply as 'Docs', the boots were originally designed for working men. Soon they transitioned into an essential part of the skinhead look, the British subculture of working class youth. Their style aimed at being different from the rest of society. From that point on, Dr. Martens were adopted into every aspect of the rebellious youth culture."I think that one of the great things about Docs is that they don't necessarily evolve over time as far as the style or shape. They were popular long before I was in high school, and they will most likely remain so after [current students] graduate. They are a great staple in anyone's closet. The evolution occurs in the target audience they reach, the outfits they are paired with and perhaps the color selection, but that's about it," English Teacher Amy Chapman said.Though we haven’t entirely lost touch of the feelings that initially sparked Dr. Martens into being a vital factor in youth culture and fashion, the immense popularity has remained the same."Docs were super popular when I was in high school in the mid to late 90s," Chapman said. "The fashion was part grunge rock, think Nirvana, and part 'Clueless,' so think baby doll dresses on top, docs on the bottom."
