ASB creates new fundraising requirement for members

Mckenna JensenStaff WriterIn an effort to get students more involved, ASB has implemented a new requirement for its members: every student enrolled in the class will now have to lead a fundraiser or event to support the school. These independent projects have already begun to debut on campus with the “Tom’s Design-a-Shoe” fundraiser (happening on Friday) and the annual Samo dodgeball tournament. Students have the opportunity to step away from what the class is doing as a whole and work more closely with what they are interested in.“We already do a lot of class projects,” junior Patrick King said, “and this is an excellent chance for students to showcase their individual talents.”As a whole, ASB works throughout the school year to put on many events and fundraisers for the school, but class adviser Veronica Garcia-Hecht thought it was time the students learned how to work for themselves.“The purpose is to make sure everyone in ASB helps the school while learning valuable leadership skills,” sophomore Tiana Kadkhoda said. “Mrs. Garcia-Hecht felt that the students should start to become independent and plan things on their own.”The proceeds of the fundraisers will go to various charities, or to the class for the purpose of putting on events and improving the school. Other events are planned to encourage school spirit and unity. So far, ASB members have provided students with events such as the “Sunny Blue” fundraiser, which donated proceeds to Japan relief through the American Red Cross. They are also preparing for the second “Stussy Sale” which will include wholesale products from brands such as Stussy, Paul Frank and Undefeated. With the end of the school year approaching, students are beginning to feel the weight of the requirement on their busy schedules. However, Kadkhoda remains positive about the task.“There is more pressure to create and administer a fundraiser because the time we have left is slowly decreasing,” Kadkhoda said. “But with all the gain that is coming from these projects, it will be worth it.”mjensen@thesamohi.com
