ASB divides to improve classwide efficiency

Olivia LeganStaff WriterIn order to improve organization and efficiency, Samo’s ASB has divided into two different groups, each focusing on a certain part of the governing body’s responsibilities.According to ASB President Azia Calderhead, ASB is now focusing on two main areas: Events and Policies. Each section is composed of three committees, which work during fourth period on their respective duties.The Policy committees are in the process of making Samo food more accessible to all students, working with administration to reform the tardy policy and improve the cleanliness of school bathrooms.“For the tardy policy, the committee is going to research how the teachers feel about the policy and what are some possible alternatives to our current one,” Tejada said. “ASB is also looking for suggestions from the student body to help them find the best way to reform the rules.”The Events committees are in charge of planning various activities on campus, such as dances, pep rallys and blood drives. When one event is over, that committee will move on to planning the next event, so that each committee is always working to plan activities.“On the days that we don’t have official meetings, we have committee time. Usually that would be all over the place, with many different committees of random sizes,” Calderhead said. “We changed the structure to balance ASB. We did it so we could be more organized and accomplish more as a class.”Tejada believes that this split will help ASB improve Samo. “In the bigger picture our class will be able to make a stronger impact on our school by allowing members of ASB to work on the issue they are most concerned with,” Tejada said. “We are also looking for suggestions from the student body to help us.”“Events and Policies really do go hand in hand to make the rest of the school aware and involved,” Sophmore Class Representative Ardsley Sanders said. “The class will not be ripped in two; we are going to be working together.”olegan@thesamohi.com
