Dr. Pedroza announces resignation
Taylor D'AndreaNews Editor Samo principal Dr. Hugo Pedroza announced on Friday his plans to resign from his position following the close of the 2010-2011 School Year.Pedroza, now on his fifth school year as principal, informed staff and faculty of his intentions with an email on Friday, April 1, in which he expressed his gratitude for the staff’s support throughout his time at Samo. He also sent a similar email to the Samo PTSA.According to his email, Pedroza was offered, and has accepted, a position as assistant superintendent of another school district. As of now, the details are still being finalized.“Please know that it has been my pleasure and distinct honor to serve the wonderful students of Santa Monica and work with a most dedicated and professional faculty and staff,” Pedroza said.Although the news is still sinking in, Samo staff members were quick to give their opinion about Pedroza’s impact on the school.“He’s been a calm and steady voice here at Samo, and I am very thankful for what he has done to get us through many difficult times,” Athletic Director Daniel Escalera said. “He will be missed.”H-House Principal Leslie Wells also offered an optimistic outlook on the next school year.“Any time an administrator leaves, it offers an opportunity for new beginnings and a re-affirmation of tradition,” Wells said.ASB Speaker of the House Clea DeCrane also believes that, although she hasn’t heard much about his impending departure from Samo, he is a kind and respected figure on campus.“He is funny and witty, and I respect him as a representative and a public figure. I also think he listens very well to students and parents,” DeCrane said.Although he did not discuss his departure in detail, Pedroza let staff members know that the district’s Senior Cabinet — which includes Assistant Superintendent Janece Maez, Assistant Superintendent Debra Moore Washington, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Sally Chou — will be heading the search for his replacement.The SMMUSD School Board is also in the process of choosing a new Superintendent, after current Superintendent Tim Cuneo announced his June 2011 resignation last September. According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, the School Board has narrowed down the pool of applicants to its top choice and is currently reviewing background information and negotiating a contract. The name of the applicant has not yet been released.Although at this time Pedroza’s plans remain unclear, he assured staff of his intentions to continue striving for excellence while still principal.“I will remain dedicated to Samohi through the end of the school year,” Pedroza said.tdandrea@thesamohi.com
