Leaders of Tomorrow participates in disability outreach

The newly established club Leaders of Tomorrow has initiated ties with two organizations — No Limits and Cause for Celebration.According to club president Brian Matusovsky (’15) , his interest in these two organizations stems from his dream of pursuing a career as a pediatric surgeon to researching birth disorders.“Our mission is to spread awareness that deafness is a much more prevalent disability than some people believe it to be, and [we want to] educate our fellow peers about what life is like for deaf children and how to help,” Matusovsky said.No Limits is an organization that helps children who are deaf or hard of hearing meet their full academic potential by providing them with tools to learn to speak, read and write. Members of the club volunteer for Cause for Celebration, which is an organization that sets up birthday parties for children who have been or are currently residing in homeless shelters.According to Matusovsky, the club attends fundraisers held by No Limits as volunteers and spreads the word to help people promote their cause. During club meetings members also practice sign-language to teach fellow students what it is like to not be able to communicate verbally.“When I discovered No Limits I felt passionate and I could really relate with their mission about providing children born with deafness every opportunity to live a normal life,” Matusovsky said. “I also just really like children in general, and I feel like Cause for Celebration is just a great way to help children better enjoy their childhoods despite whatever unfortunate adversity they have to face.”Among the volunteers from Leaders of Tomorrow are Janet Garcia (‘15) and Cynthia Cadena (‘15), who served as translators at a Cause for Celebration birthday party.“It was nice seeing their smiles. They’re kids. This is the time of their lives that they’re not supposed to be worrying about anything, especially not their financial status. They’re supposed to be kids and enjoy their childhood,” Cadena said.bgonzalez@thesamohi.com
