Voters in Santa Monica and Malibu passed Measure BB in 2006, a bill that funded SMMUSD with 60 million dollars, and a portion of this money will be allocated towards 18 new classrooms at Samo, including a new auto shop, a new computer lab and an intensive services classroom for students with special needs at Samo.Accoding to Dean of Students Catherine Baxter, Measure BB has also funded other schools in the district such as Edison Language Academy's new building, with aspirations of achieving higher learning.Ethan Kennedy ('15) said that the funding will keep the science program up to date."It will be nice being in a more 21st century environment, so the science program can be up to date with the blooming society," Kennedy said.Measure BB's funding will help repair several of the schools in the district that are over 60 years old, such as Edison, Lincoln and Samo, all of which are in need of repair, according to SMMUSD's website.SMMUSD's website also said that for safety concern Measure BB will repair damaged roofs, remove all mold, an upgrade in plumbing, as well as installing fire safety equipment.According to Baxter, each classroom at Samo will be occupied with an LCD projector attached to the ceiling, eight laptop computers and portable microphones for when students and teachers speak.“These better lab stations will immensely help classes like chemistry and bio where students have many hands on labs and experiments," Baiyu Li ('15) said. "Better resources such as computers will help science classes as a whole."
