Possibility of a Friday prom creates conflict

Natasha MunasingheStaff WriterProm may be scheduled for a Friday next year, throwing student plans into conflict.Junior Steering President and Senior Class President Elect Alex Harros (’14) said prom planning for next year is in its first stages of development, meaning that the venue and date have not yet been confirmed.Harros said one positive aspect to having prom on a Friday is that seniors would have a whole weekend to recuperate from Friday nightlong celebrations.According to Gilda Gonzalez (’14) because of the already added stress of school, she might not go to prom if it were on a Friday.“If prom were on a Friday, I would think about it throughout school,” Gonzalez said. “I would be focused on the stress of wondering if I have everything ready and perfect for prom rather than focusing on my school work. The best choice would be just not to go.”Harros acknowledges that students need time to prepare and will take that into consideration when he and Junior Steering decide whether to stay with The Beverly Hilton Hotel and have prom on a Friday or opt for another venue.“I hope for next year’s prom to be special for the seniors attending,” Harros said. “I look at it as a night for them to celebrate their time at Samo and at the same time look forward to the future. It gives the graduating class one last chance to be together as a whole before we go our separate ways after high school.”nmunasinghe@thesamohi.com
