S-House Leadership makes Samo students feel appreciated

S-House Leadership is attempting to make the 2012-13 school year more enjoyable for the entire school through their Kindness Campaign, introduced last year by teacher Meredith Louria.According to senior S-House Leadership member Nima Shajarian, the Kindness Campaign is built around the idea of making the students at Samo feel appreciated as well as raising awareness of bullying on campus.“[The Kindness Campaign is] a way to make kids feel good at school, and we've thought of ways to reward kids for good deeds not necessarily scholastically, but rather in their actions,” Shajarian said.According to Shajarian, S-House Leadership began the campaign last year as part of a school-wide service project. The leadership group asked students to sign statements about being kind and more respectful to others, as well as being more aware of bullying.  Members then came up with various ways to try to increase student happiness and confidence.“Members of S-House Leadership made countless notes, each containing a kind message meant to make the receiver happy and feel special,” sophomore S-House Leadership member Joseph Staraci said. “We made posters on which students walking the halls could sign their names, vowing to commit to various things like being kind, standing up to bullying [and] being respectful.”According to Staraci, S-House Leadership hopes to continue the campaign, despite the fact that not many students were not aware of it last year.“It lasted only a week or two [and] I think a lot of students may have forgotten it,” Staraci said. “S-House Leadership does so many great things around campus, yet it isn't as pervasive and well known as it would need to be to make a huge impact.”Staraci said the program is a work in progress and the students of S-House Leadership are working to improve how the campaign runs for the future. According to Louria, the leadership was able to put on four events for S-House, and they have four new events planned for this year as well.“We're focusing on improving moral among students and making every student feel important and valued,” Louria said.fbillington@thesamohi.com
