ASB ends school year with "Hunger Games" pep rally

Students were transported to the Capitol for a fiery “Hunger Games”-themed spring pep rally. During the rally, grade representatives competed in their very own Hunger Games. The senior class was named victor, the class with the most school spirit.According to ASB President Brian Matusovsky (’15), the increased involvement of students and advisories in the rally marked the beginning of a more spirited student body.“This year, the House Advisory system was somewhat flawed, with certain houses having very involved advisories and others not having any at all,” Matusovsky said. “We plan to make all of the house advisories active groups on campus next year, separate from but supported by ASB.”ASB hopes that all of the students from each of the house’s advisories worked together to compete in each activity, according to Matusovsky.“At the end of each lunch, the winning house gained a point as though it had won any normal inter-house competition,” Matusovsky said. “We counted up all of the total competitions won throughout the year, and added the interhouse spirit day competition winnings to them.”The activities include the Warhead Challenge on Wednesday May 21, Waterballoon Throwing on Thursday May 22 and Watermelon Feasting on Friday May 23.“The Warhead challenge, for example, consisted of each house trying to spit Warhead candies into a bucket, each member of the house taking turns one at a time from a line, with the house with the most warheads in its buckets winning,” Matusovsky said.According to Jackie Forsyte, ASB sold spirit grams for the spring rally and delivered the gifts during fourth period on the day of the rally.“In the Hunger Games, tributes can receive parachute grams from donors so this is our re-creation of that,” Forsyte said. “We bought plastic parachute men, and we tied bags of candy to the men with the parachute. [The grams] came with a  ‘Happy Hunger Games and May the odds be ever in your favor’ card attached.”According to Senior Class Vice President Sean McHugh (’15), ASB used decorations that resembled the world of the novels and dressed rally performers as characters from the books for the rally.“[Matusovsky] and the ASB advisor Bryn Boyd will be called President Snow and Effie Trinket respectively,” McHugh said. “We are trying to make it as realistic as possible.”ASB member Talon Hadfield (’15) said that ASB used a theme that is relatable and fun for the majority of the school and allowed for the rally and prior activities to be more engaging and creative.“As always, ASB succeeded in getting the school hyped up about this upcoming rally,” Hadfield said. “The main purpose of the rally was not only for entertainment, but also a final farewell to our beloved ’14’s.”bgonzalez@thesamohi.com
