Put some clothes on, please

Dear girl standing in front of me in the snack line,Are you aware that Samo has a dress code? Well, just in case you aren’t, let me enlighten you. The student handbook clearly states students shall not express themselves in ways that are “obscene, libelous, or slanderous.” And, well, I find your nipple ring obscene.I’m aware it’s unacceptable to judge people based on appearances, but I’m also aware that it’s even more unacceptable for teens to present themselves as sexual objects. So with that said, please cover your chest.Regardless of what you may see in the media, it’s not  appropriate for a 14-year-old girl to wear an extremely low cut top. Teenage girls are dressing more sexually and starting to do so much younger, but they’re neither emotionally nor socially ready to deal with the attention and sexual pressure from boys that their style evokes. It’s not “cute” or “hot” to see teens demoralize themselves by dressing like strippers.Unfortunately, we live in a superficial world and people, girls in particular, are judged on their looks. But there’s a double-edged sword: although it may feel nice to have a guy look at you, the attention you receive is not respect, admiration or love — it’s objectification.Girls who use provocative clothing to get attention may begin to believe their sexuality is the most important part of themselves. This can contribute to gaining a negative reputation that can eventually lead down a bad path. Likewise, boys who grow up in an environment where women intentionally treat their sexuality cheaply will not grow up to respect women as equals.Teens have always been out to set themselves apart and express their freedom; it’s a part of growing up. But recent trends have led girls down a lascivious path, encouraging them to wear the least clothes possible. This is the wrong message for our culture to be sending its youth.Oh and, for your information, an American Apparel lace bra really doesn’t count as a bra.
