Despite frustrations, girls’ soccer remains optimistic
Muhammad Yusuf TarrStaff WriterIn light of last year’s loss in the Ocean League finals, girls’ soccer, focusing on progression, is motivated to do better this year.Since the team lost both the Ocean League and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) competition last year, the team was not confident in its skill this year. According to captain Marie Salem (’14), however, the girls won the scrimmage at John Adams Middle School on Nov. 20 against Notre Dame Academy.“After our victory against Notre Dame Academy, I am really optimistic about our chances this year,” captain Rachel Paris (’13) said. “Losing Ocean League last year is certainly something that has pushed us to work harder [and] we were forced to meet higher standards of conditioning and skill than in previous years earlier in the season.”Janet Coleman-Belin (’15) agreed with Paris.“Our loss does not affect us negatively, but rather pushes us to do better and win,” Coleman-Belin said.According to coach Jimmy Chapman, Ella Warshauer (’13) exhibited good defense at the scrimmage and Lana Saykali (’13) followed suit. Even with the loss against Mira Costa High School, assistant coach Angel Vasquez agreed with Chapman.Chapman said that a few of the girls could not play in the game against Mira Costa due to their membership in club soccer, which prevents them from playing for another team while their season is still ongoing.“We were missing three [players],” Chapman said. “Every school deals with this every year, but fortunately we do not have to deal with it as much.”Even though the girls won the scrimmage against Notre Dame, losing to Mira Costa was not a good way to start the season. According to Chapman, their victory against San Pedro High School will possibly lead the girls in the right direction for their tournament in South Torrance on Dec. 8.“We want to win, but we have a chance to get back at it and get back on the field and redeem ourselves,” Chapman said.Salem said that the girls’ next tough game will be against Palos Verdes High School and they are looking forward to defeating their rivals Beverly Hills High School and Culver City High School.“The next challenging team will be Palos Verdes at home, which everyone is looking forward to,” Salem said. “After preseason we will be focused on the Beverly and Culver games in order to win [Ocean] League.”Coleman-Belin said that the team’s goals are to win Ocean League and to make it to the third round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) competition.“This will motivate us to practice harder,” Salem said. “I think we are getting there [and] I definitely think we could have done a little bit better but if we practice harder, we will get back out there.”mytarr@thesamohi.com
