Chase WohrleStaff WriterEven though Samo was crushed in its Ocean League opener to Inglewood, 28-7, it can take solace in the previous week’s victory over Compton Centennial. Before the first quarter began, the coin toss revealed that Samo would receive. Senior Brandon Taylor scored the first touchdown. The short pass was completed by sophomore Rhys Gervais. Neither the Vikings nor the Apaches scored the rest of the quarter.Briefly after the second quarter began junior Kori Garcia ran 20 yards for a touchdown. The Apaches were quick to respond with a touchdown, setting the score at 14-7. Gervais retaliated with a short pass to senior Kris Comas. Garcia scored again in the last 30 seconds of the final minute, ending the half at 28-7.The first four minutes of the third quarter brought a quick pass to Comas to score a touchdown. In the last four minutes of the quarter Garcia scored his third touchdown of the game. Shortly after that, senior Deon Bishop sustained a rib injury after receiving a rough blow. After a minute on the ground, Bishop walked off the field and sat out for the rest of the game. During the series that followed, Centennial scored but was unable to make the point after touchdown on a bad snap, ending the third quarter at 49-13.The game ended at 56-13 after a pass from senior Brock Miller to Comas, totaling four touchdowns by Comas, the most scored by anyone in the game.Despite the win, coach Travis Clark was unsatisfied with his team’s performance. “Lazy guys had a lazy week of practice and that transformed into the game,” he said.On the contrary Gervais was satisfied. “I feel really good,” Gervais said. “I wanted to bounce back from those four picks in the Valencia game.” His main focus is now the Ocean League. “League starts next week and I just want to come out and sling it,” he said. “We want to go 5-0 these next five games.”cwohrle@thesamohi.com
