Girls' golf begins season 0-1

Girls' golf lost its first game of the season to Palos Verdes 320 - 167 on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The newly formed team consists of six Samo golfers who have been playing anywhere from two weeks to nine years.

This is coach Ryan Hoffman’s first year of coaching the Samohi girl's golf team, but he has been coaching boys' golf for the past three years as well as teaching statistics at Samo.

"The best part of [our first match] was getting our first match under our belts, learning from our mistakes, and figuring out what we have to do to get better for [Wednesday]," Hoffman said.

The first home game was played at Penmar Golf Course, a nine hole course, and ended in a loss to a senior-dominated team from Palos Verdes. However, it was the first Samo girls' golf game in five years.

“For me getting a par was the best part of the game,” junior Angelina Hwang said, who has been playing golf for 2 years. “It’s our first game ever, and a lot of us haven’t been playing for that long. I think we will get better as the season progresses, we have a pretty strong team.”

According to Hwang and Junior Alex Gillespie a lot of people are unaware of the team, and that they themselves were shocked when they found out there was going to be one.

“I’m just hoping that we will all achieve our personal best,” Gillespie said regarding the rest of the season. The team will be playing two more games this week, Wednesday, Sept. 12, and Thursday, Sept. 13, both against Palos Verdes.
