Emma WergelesStaff WriterAfter three rounds of play, Samo's girls' tennis team ends up on top with a score of 14-4 after its first round of CIF against Crescent Valley High School on Wednesday, Oct. 31.The girls' first round was incredibly successful with only one loss against the best doubles players on the opposing team. The first round was highlighted by a 6-1 win from junior Christine Maddox, a 6-0 win from sophomore Masa Petrovic and a 6- 2 win from sophomore doubles players Layla Parvis and Samantha Ahn.“We played really great today. We had a goal of winning our first CIF round and exceeded our expectations. We all knew we had to step up and fight hard so we went out there and gave it our best,” senior captain Melanie Shaevel said. The second round was played equally as well, with a score of 6- 0 from Maddox, a win of 6- 3 from Petrovic and a 6- 0 win from doubles players sophomore Chloe Wight and freshman Rowan Cheung. However, the doubles players from Crescent Valley High managed to beat Samo's doubles team, ending this round with a score of 10-2.“I am really pleased with the outcome, the girls did an absolute great job and they have been working extremely hard and its really been showing,” senior captain Annie Weisenfeld said. The final round of play was highlighted by a 6- 0 win from Wight and Cheung, a 6- 2 win from S. Ahn and Parvis and a tough game played by Petrovic that eventually ended with a win of 7-5.“I feel like we played really well as a team. We had a lot of good energy and we were all really focused on winning,” Wight said, “We all really stepped up our level of playing when it mattered and we pulled out some tough matches.”In the end of the match the score was 14- 4 with a strong Samo win.  Hopefully as their CIF run continues, they can keep up this strong play.“To keep this momentum [for the rest of CIF] we need to have high hopes and be clear headed so we do not stress out and become nervous,” Shaevel said, “I think we will [play] great against who ever our next opponent is.”ewergeles@thesamohi.com
