Athletes to watch: H2Olsen
Adie DinolfoSports EditorThe Samohi Greenies have a reputation that is difficult to maintain. Rising senior Charlie Olsen is a player who exhibits qualities imperative to success.“He responds well to coaching and respects his fellow teammates,” Coach Matt Flanders said. “He leads by example; he works out so hard everybody else around him wants to work out that hard too.”After one year on junior varsity, Olsen was moved up to varsity as a sophomore. Olsen attends every practice at Samo and plays on a separate club team, which meets three times a week for 2 hours a day. Olsen participates in additional tournaments and games almost every weekend.“Practices are really challenging, the other players are really good, so it’s a great opportunity to get better,” Olsen said.Because many players are graduating this year, the starting lineup and goalie will be relatively new. Although the thought is slightly intimidating, the team shares a common excitement and strives for a strong season.“He’s a great team player, always supportive, and never judges you on your talent in water polo, but instead tries to help you,” teammate and junior Nate Attarzadeh said. The boys start their summer training now and continue throughout the entire summer. Olsen will co-lead the team next year with fellow rising senior Jordan Bishop. With their season beginning in early September, there is no time to waste.adinolfo@thesamohi.com
