Samo boys' volleyball sets Culver City and Inglewood straight
Chelsea BrandweinStaff Writer“S-A-M-O” the boys’ volleyball team chanted in unison as they broke from their huddle on March 22 at home in the North Gym. The Vikings reigned over Culver City, winning the game 3-0.“We were consistent. We blocked well, served well and played well,” senior Julian Hess said after the game.Sophomore Dane Keckin, whose sister, father and uncle are all Samo Vikings and Samo volleyball players, said, “Our focus was much better, we took care of business.”Senior David Cline returned to the court after injuring his sternum and was pleased to contribute to the win.Throughout the game, coach Liane Sato sat at attention with her clipboard, rising intermittently to offer words of encouragement to the boys before a serve. In the end the boys won 25-7, 25-2, 25-5.“We played better than we did the last time. If we make fewer errors every time we play, the sky’s the limit,” junior Trevor Pye said.In their game against Inglewood on March 25, the boys beat the Sentinels in three sets, 25-7, 25-5, 25-3.In the third set, sophomore middle blocker Spencer Cramer served 22 straight points, twelve of the serves being jump serves. Sato believes this accomplishment to be an all time Samo record.“I didn’t really think about it, I just kept doing the same [serving] motions. Once I got to point 22, I realized I could just keep going until the game ended,” Cramer said. The Vikings played Inglewood again, in their most recent game at home and again the boys won in three games, 25-8, 25-6, and 25-7.“This game was a good opportunity for us to work on our consistency and focus,” senior Charles Levy said.cbrandwein@thesamohi.com
