Samo football beats Inglewood, 21-0
On Nov. 1, Samo defeated Inglewood 21-0 in an emotional victory to finish out the team's last home game.It was Samo's last home game before the playoffs and for most of the seniors, their last home game ever. Samo is trailing in league and at this point, the team's fate is out of its hands. Culver City must lose its next game in order for Samo to win league, and although there is a possibility that Samo could lose Ocean League, it will still make the playoffs as a two seed. This game was more important than just a win, however. It was a way for Samo's seniors to say their farewells to the fans and the stadium they've played at for years."I'm very proud of the team," Coach Travis Clark said. "It's the seniors last night playing on this field and the effort they came putt with tonight couldn't make me happier. We played like champs tonight."The defense carried the team throughout the game, scoring two touchdowns and forcing three tournovers giving Samo the edge and eventually beating Inglewood."Our defensive play is great," Clark said. "Our defensive line has been playing great all season. We rely on our defense heavily and they have had two shutouts this year. They have played great all season."The game was pretty close up until the third quarter when Denicio Gonzalez-Drake ('14) blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to put Samo up 21-0."There's a lot of emotions going through my head right now," Gonzalez-Drake said. "I'm just happy I could put the team in my back and help out to pick up the win."According to Clark, after the loss to Culver City the week before, the emphasis at practice was getting back on track and keeping everyone motivated."The players were so down after the loss to Culver I just tried to keep them focused on Inglewood and it obviously worked," Clark said. "They had a great week of practice and it showed on the field."
