Cross country brought home a cornucopia of medals Friday after a successful second meet at Woodbridge.
Sophomore Arden Lassalle came in first in his division at the Woodbridge Invitational meet at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa, becoming the first Samo runner to ever win a race at Woodbridge and making himself the fastest sophomore in Samo history.
The boys' and girls' cross country teams competed in several divisions at the meet, including Frosh - Boys, Soph - Girls and Soph - Boys, JV - Girls, Varsity - Girls, Junior - Boys and Senior - Boys divisions.
Samo boys placed 25th overall for Frosh, 12th for Soph, 8th for Junior and 12th for Senior divisions.
“I’d say it was a great start to the season,” Senior Alberto Jarrin said.
Lassalle came in first in the boy’s Soph race with a speed of 5:12 per mile and an overall time of 15:37.
“Having our sophomore Arden win his race has inspired and motivated us all, including upperclassmen, to have an unforgettable season,” Jarrin said.
The girls' team placed second in Soph, 18th in JV and 15th in Varsity divisions.
"Everyone ran so well," Head Coach Tania Fischer said. "Congrats to Arden Lasalle who won the Soph race with a blazing time of 15:37 and Alice Wasserman who ran 18:33."
The Woodbridge Invitational meet and the first meet of the season, Seaside Invitational, have set the tone for the rest of the season.
“The majority of our team beat their previous times and got medals,” girls' captain Karina Sandoval said. “Our performance was a reflection of all our hard work.”
