The Artist: Molly Conn '12
Amancai Biraben Staff WriterIt takes creativity and imagination to turn an object into art. Molly Conn has this talent, and has a unique ability to see objects in a lighting that most people normally wouldn’t.“I like to look at everyday objects in a humorous light,” Conn said, “I’ve turned an ATV into a cupcake and the San Francisco subway into a spaceship through video,” Conn said. However, even if one has the imagination to come up with these ideas, it isn’t always easy to turn them into an actual product.“It can be so tedious! Every day of my life! The darkroom in my closet is such a frustrating place but sometimes I like what I get out of it. Darkness is my biggest fear so I like that I found something that makes me face it everyday,” Conn said. However, no fear could stop Conn from pursuing her passion. She spends over two hours a day on art while she spends a mere three hours a week watching TV. Conn says that she never does homework at home, and her outside-of-school life is mostly consumed by her artwork and creative pursuits.Conn—through her enrollment in both AP Art and photography—also has access to a large range of art materials and opportunities at Samo.“I like things that are permanent, like ink, film photography, watercolors and sculpture,” Conn said. “I stay away from charcoal and pastels and stuff…I don’t like messes.”So the question that remains is, where will all this experience and love go? Her dorm walls in college or straight to the Louvre?“I would love to go to art school,” Conn said. “After that, though, I really don’t know. I don’t generally think that far ahead.” abiraben@thesamohi.com
