HOTLB: Samo’s “her-story” faves

March is National Women’s History Month (NWHM) – a time to celebrate historical women from the United States of America and around the world. The United States, Australia and the United Kingdom all celebrate Women’s History Month in March, while many other countries celebrate Women’s History Day on March 8. With women so often overlooked in history, NWHM celebrates and recognizes women’s grand achievements and the important contributions that they have made to America. We asked Samo students who their favorite historical woman is and why:

Ryan Kim / The Samohi

“I would say my grandma. Her name was Mary Wilson — she was a famous singer. She was very supportive of [the feminist movement], she never took crap from anyone. She stood up for what was right. She’s a great role model” -Allie Fuller (’24)

Louis Rotgin / The Samohi

“My favorite historical woman is Elizabeth Cady Stanton because she held the first convention at Seneca Falls, which was for women’s rights, and she’s just an inspiration to all women who want to make a difference” -Becky Scholze (’26)

Louis Rotgin / The Samohi

“My favorite historical woman is probably Marie Curie because she was an inspirational woman. Her inventions revolutionized modern medicine and we have a lot to thank her for.” -Felipe Martini (’25)

Hawene Alemayehu / The Samohi

“It’s hard to pick a specific person, but I would have to say that Joan Didion has left a large impression on me. By unapologetically sharing uncomfortable truths, her writing has transcended generations of women. Her essay ‘Goodbye to All That’ will stay with me forever.” -Gigi Bazyler (’24)
