In Review: "Cozy Tapes, Vol. 1: Friends" by A$AP Yams
On Oct. 31, A$AP Mob, a New York based rap collective, released a new album memorializing the late founder of the group, A$AP Yams, titled “Cozy Tapes, Vol. 1: Friends.” This tape could be the best rap album of the year, incorporating an all-star cast of 12 different rappers. It ranges from all types of moods with the high energy “Telephone Calls” by A$AP Rocky, Tyler, the Creator, Playboi Carti and Yung Gleesh, to the melodical “Put That On My Set” by A$AP Rocky and Skepta. Every song on the album could be argued as the best, resulting in an extremely enjoyable listening experience. A$AP Mob’s prior release “Lords Never Worry” came out in August, 2012, and since that time, fans of the popular hip-hop collective had patiently waited for their next release. The four-year hiatus must have been spent crafting “Cozy Tapes,” for each song exceeds all the songs from the past album. The composition, production and lyrics of every track are off the chart. There isn’t any rap record or project rivaling the sheer skill shown on this tape at the moment. It is a project for true rap fans.Although every song is incredible, one that stands out is “Young N***a Living,” for it has exceptional production and a smooth chorus. The verses from each rapper is divine, but A$AP Twelvyy’s lyrical performance is a stand-out on this song. Another notable track is “Nasty’s World” by A$AP Nast and ONYX, which is reminiscent of a classic 90s hip-hop hit with its simple production and profound lyrical content. On “Nasty’s World,” A$AP Nast’s unique voice brings a bizarre sound to the song, but its originality feels authentic. This album deserves an endless amount of praise but, this album has a deeper meaning behind the great music, for it is a tribute to the founder of ASAP Mob. “This is his album,” A$AP Rocky said. “I wanted to show Yams in his purest form. When you see Yams and think about him, you think the tattoos, braids and stuff. Right here is his purest form. This is his happiest thoughts.” A$AP Yams died of an acute mixed drug intoxication. This album has been highly anticipated for close to a year, and it not only met, but exceeded expectations. Pleasing loyal fans and attracting some new ones.
