In Review: "Doctor Strange"

The multi-genre film titled “Doctor Strange” was released in theatres on Nov. 4. The film is a science fiction/fantasy, magical blend that incorporates very subtle humor to make the fiction almost believable. “Doctor Strange” is Marvel’s newest film, which they hope will duplicate the success of their previous movie, “Deadpool.”Dr. Strange, the protagonist in the movie, is played by well-known actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The British actor disguises his accent and plays the role of an arrogant yet brilliant American neurosurgeon. After a fatal accident taking place early in the film, Strange’s hope of continuing his career fades. All that’s left is the spirit within him. After a long, inseptuous journey across the world, Dr. Strange endures heavy training in an attempt to gain magical powers. As time advances, he begins to grasp the true concept of “magic,” leaving his prior life behind.“Doctor Strange” integrates chaotic special effects that few previous films have displayed. Cities rotating, mirrors launching from human palms and portals made from hand-made energy are major elements in the movie. The film’s special effects are so intense that at times it is almost nauseating to view. The sci-fi is mostly made up of battle scenes with the action being driven by spells. While the battle scenes carry a lot of emotion as well as advancing the plot, it got to be immensely repetitive. The same types of spells were being thrown and the same people fought.Comedy is inserted throughout the film, making the movie filled with magic seem more down-to-earth. What one would think is a strict, serious man is instantly fooled when the character cracks a dry joke to get the audience chuckling. Other than the small bits of comedy embedded throughout, the film stays true to its science fiction core.“Doctor Strange” consists of a combination of a great cast and great special effects. Although the motion picture isn’t appealing to those who don't enjoy this style of superhero movie, fantasy lovers are destined to see what would be one of their favorite Marvel movies yet.P.S. Be sure to stay until the very end of the film – after all the credits – to watch the final, cliff-hanging scene.
