Homecoming Queen and King

On Oct. 14, in front of excited spectators at Samo’s Homecoming football game against Hawthorne High School, Diana Cruz (’17) and Duncan Smith (’17) were crowned Homecoming Queen and King.Earlier in the day, at the Homecoming Pep Rally, Cruz and Smith were presented with the other eight members of the Homecoming Court.  After the rally, all Samo students voted for queen and by paper ballots that were later counted by ASB.  The win evoked a sense of pride in both students. Cruz, who was at first surprised, saw her mom screaming and crying from the stands. “I felt a new feeling of success,” Cruz said. “I felt very proud that I could open myself up to others.” Smith acknowledged the satisfaction gained from his victory. “Being right in front of the marching band and listening to them blast their horns was so rewarding,” Smith said. He was overjoyed to hear his fellow marching band team members yelling that he “made marching band cool again” and “the nerds have prevailed”. Both Cruz and Smith sported beaming smiles all night.
