Homecoming: to go or not to go?

NoHomecoming has always been a festivity everyone looks forward too, but a question always arises: is homecoming worth it? While many argue that you cannot put a price on a once in a lifetime opportunity that all teenagers wait for, it should not be viewed this way.The starting price this year was $25 per ticket, and only increased each week. This can be a burden for many families that want to send their kids to the dance but simply can’t afford it; even with the ASB pass it is a hardship because you have the ASB pass money on top of the $20, $25 or $30. Other than the price being absurd, not all funds go to the dance, only a portion of the money is meant for the dance the rest is used for other ASB events, such as pep rallies. The price for the ticket also doesn’t include the food at the dance: it is not purchased by ASB funds. Instead, the food is donated by restaurants ASB contacts. Decorations, or the lack thereof, is also due to the fact that the ticket revenue isn’t used for decorations. Money for the dance is mainly spent on the DJ and lights. This means that the ticket price doesn’t go into food, decorations or even the venue since the dance has been traditionally held in either the Centennial Quad or The Greek. The DJ this year, although better than the last, was still mediocre at best, and the music he played was limited. When my friend and I requested a specific Missy Elliot song, he said he didn’t have it but instead would play another one he already had prepared. He tried to accommodate what we wanted, but shouldn’t any DJ have access to millions of songs in all different varieties? If the dance was moved to a hotel or we were supplied with decorations and a better DJ, I am sure this question of is the price of Homecoming worth it wouldn’t be a question at all. I believe that instead of is it worth it, the question would be how much? Getting supplied with a DJ that has access to all genres of music and having decorations such as streamers or getting food included within the price would not only not raise the question, is it worth it, but instead would cause excitement and entice more students to go.If moving the dance or supplying more things within the price wasn’t an option, I believe that the price of the dance should be lowered to $10 initially and go up from there, I am sure ASB would either match or increase their revenue due to the larger amount of people that would be able to go.Homecoming prices are not worth it, for the constantly increasing prices make it difficult to afford. School dances are not all they seem, and you don’t need to waste money on a Homecoming ticket.
