A Scoreless Thriller: Boys soccer ties with San Pedro
After a devastating loss 0-5 against Torrance High School the week prior, on Dec. 1 the Samo boys soccer team was hungry for a win against San Pedro High School. But the win never came and ended the game with a tie of 0-0. At the start of the game, Samo possessed the ball, keeping it in the attacking zone. It was a game of defense, and this proved how talented each team’s defense actually was. Defender Will Wisen (’18) was communicating with his linemates, letting them know where to be at all times. This limited San Pedro to very few shots, and made Samo’s goalie’s job much easier.“We didn't get the outcome we hoped for, but this game was definitely an improvement from the last game. We will continue to grow as a team and expect a win next game,” Wisen said. After a slow first half, the score remained 0-0, but Samo was still fired up to make a play. And with that, Samo’s offense fired up throughout the second half, but the ball didn’t go their way, keeping it an extremely defensive match. Later in the second half, San Pedro had a great chance to score on a breakaway, but center midfielder Zia Yang (’19) extended his hand out to block the ball. The referee gave him a red card as a result, and Samo was down a player the rest of the game. San Pedro was awarded a penalty shot, but goalie Nate Comay (’19) dove to block it, keeping the shutout. Non-playoff games do not go into extra time, so either team needed to score just once to take the game. It was evident that both Samo and San Pedro were fighting for a much needed win, but the ball went back and forth for the last few minutes, not finding its way into the back of the net.“We were able to succeed and keep a clean sheet by playing hard, winning our challenges on and off the ball and focusing on keeping the game flowing,” Comay said.
