Girls lax loses second game against Downey
On Wed. April 26, the girls lacrosse team played their second game against Downey High School. Many of the players were not anticipating a win since they lost their first game 13-2. In their second matchup, the team tried strengthening their defense, but they lost 12-2.“This was our second to last game of this season and I had high hopes for the game,” Justine Beirne said. “They didn't start out the game on a good foot and I think most of the girls were still feeling the burn of the loss from last time.”The students and coaches thought that the referees were not thorough with their calls. There were too many false calls and not enough true fouls called. “There were a lot of times where nothing actually happened and the ref called for the game to stop. We were there for a lot longer than we needed and it was really aggravating,” Lily Reynaldo (’17) said. The game started with three goals made in the samo goal. Throughout the game, the team was unable to score more than two goals and the the opposing team was able to use their strong offense to score time after time on the home goal. The students believed that one of the reasons Downey had an edge up on the team was their size. Their team has double the amount of players, which meant they got to switch out players and experience less fatigue. “Since it's the end of the season, we have started thinking about how I improve the team for next year. We need to expand our size so we can be fairly matched up against the other teams in our league,” Beirne said. Though the team was unsuccessful in beating Downey, their final game is Fri., April 28 on the turf field. They will be playing their second game against Beverly Hills High School, and are hoping for a second win to end the season strong.
