Samo defeats Birmingham to extend undefeated run
Once again, the Samo boys lacrosse team won another match, this time defeating Birmingham Community Charter High School by a score of 15-3.The team demonstrated control of the match from the very beginning of the game; they maintained possession and patiently built up their attacks. Their patience was rewarded with two goals in the beginning of the first quarter. After the game became more balanced, Samo was able to get a third goal 30 seconds before halftime.“We have been very consistent with how much effort we put into games and practices,” Nico Balderrama (’17) said. “We always give a hundred percent.”Samo largely extended their lead in the second quarter. After a couple of minutes of rather uneventful play with Birmingham getting a goal back, a festival of goals ensued. In the matter of two minutes, Samo extended their lead to 9-1.In the second half, Samo continued asserting their dominance in a more composed manner. Showing skill in their defense, Samo only gained two more goals and intercepted Birmingham’s passes. They showed prowess in the middle of the field as they were constantly able to pass and patiently waited for an opportunity to get to goal. By the end of the regulation time, Samo had extended their lead to 15-3. The end of the game even gave some young players valuable playing time.“I believe our team was really able to practice the little things,” Collin Ferrara (’17) said. “Games like Birmingham provide our team with the ability to perfect everything before a more challenging opponent. I was always trying to get the younger guys involved when they would come in.”Now that Samo is halfway through league with a 5-0 record and a regular season record of 11-0, Samo is one game closer to an Ocean league title. But for now they are looking to extend their undefeated season record, which may be in jeopardy in an upcoming home game against El Segundo High School, a team which they narrowly beat 9-8 a an away game.
