Softball finishes league season undefeated

The Samo softball team finished their 2016-2017 with another win on May 8 against Culver City High School, making the team undefeated in league. Samo won with a score of 3-0.Being one of the last league games of the season, it was especially important to the seniors on the team, as coach Kalie Nakao (’11) said.“They wanted to win for the seniors today, their last home league game,” Nakao said. “That was a big factor. They wanted to win for them.”Makensey Druckman (’17) got a hit in that scored the team two runs. She credits the motivation behind that to the support her teammates give her.“When Kenedee (Jamerson (’17)) came up to me, she gave me a little pep talk before I went up to bat,” Druckman said. “That really got me pumped up and I still think that’s why I hit it as hard as I did.”Over her four years in Samo softball, Druckman feels her playing has changed significantly.“I feel like I’m more confident,” Druckman said. “I’m playing more just for fun now because this is my last time with all these girls, and I’m really capturing all these moments.  Now my goal is to keep playing so I can keep playing with my teammates.”Jasmine Gomez (’17) has been on the varsity team for four years, and also thinks she has improved.“I’ve improved not just physically but emotionally, because this game is fast,” Gomez said.  “From my freshman year, coming on varsity it was a lot harder than i thought it was going to be but I worked, and now I’m a senior.  It wasn’t that much of a difference because I’ve been here for four years, but it was emotionally was probably my biggest improvement.”Both Gomez and Druckman love their teammates, and feel this year’s team is better than ever.“I think this year has been the best year, where all the girls are actually together,” Gomez said.  “The past couple years we’ve had team bonding, we were all close, but this year we do everything together, and we’re literally a family.”“I couldn’t ask for a better team,” Druckman said. The team is currently ranked number one in Ocean League, and is headed to CIF.
