Softball loses first home game of the season

The Samo softball team had a rocky start to their season after losing their first home game to South Torrance High School on Fri., March 10. This game brings their Ocean League score to 1-2.The first few innings of the game started off with fast pitches by South Torrance and Samo player Kenedee Jamerson (’17), and not much scoring.  At the second half, both teams started to pick up momentum, with South Torrance managing to pull ahead in the seventh inning. Coach Kalie Nakao (’11) was happy with the gameplay until the end.“We played good, for the six innings,” Nakao said. “(In the) seventh inning we kinda fell apart and made a couple errors. Our catcher feel asleep, they stole on us. We just have to close the game out and we should’ve definitely done that.”Many members of the team, including Jamerson, felt the reason for their lost was in the seventh inning.“I think [our stamina] was pretty solid,” Jamerson said.  “We played a good six innings. I just think in the last inning we kind of relaxed a little bit, our mental game wasn’t there. I think for the most part we played hard, we tried, we never gave up until the last out, the last pitch.”Given that this was the first home game of the season, there was some anxiousness among the players.  According to Mckenzie Druckman (’17), this was also an important game because it was against South Torrance.“I think a lot of girls were nervous because it was our first game, and also we have a history with that team,” Druckman said. “I think we won six times and lost six times to them, so we wanted to break that.  It was our first game so it was a little nerve wracking.”All in all, the team was happy with their playing up until the seventh inning, and now has even more drive to win in their next game against Hawthorne on Tues. March 21.
