With a motivated crowd, an especially potent offense and an aggressive defense, Samo football put on a spectacle in their homecoming game, demolishing Hawthorne High School 47-0 on Friday, Oct. 10. Following a 10-8 win at Pomona on Thursday, Oct. 2, Samo’s record now stands at 3-3.Four minutes into the game, Samo struck first with a touchdown, sparking an offensive onslaught that would continue throughout the game. Then, six minutes into the first quarter, Samo scored two touchdowns within ten seconds of each other. The team ended the quarter leading 20-0.The second quarter highlighted Samo’s defensive skills, as Samo recorded three sacks and multiple tackles for loss of yardage. The team later scored two touchdowns, bringing the halftime score to 34-0.The Vikings’ numerous defensive stops marked the start of the third quarter. A touchdown later in the quarter brought the score to 41-0.Two Samo players, including receiver Ryan Suggs (’17) and linebacker Justin Nelson (’15), were forced to leave the game due to injuries during this quarter. Starting kicker Jordan Golden (’16) was also unavailable, due to a recent appendicitis procedure. According to coach Travis Clark, the injuries appear minor.The team was motivated by the raucous homecoming crowd, creating an atmosphere of excitement and intensity, according to Clark.“The crowd was awesome,” Clark said. “When [the players] look and see their entire sideline packed, [they become] so motivated.”Samo scored a final touchdown in the fourth quarter, and capped off the 47-0 victory with a long interception run.“Our defensive line played a heck of a game,” Clark said. “They just dominated the game all night.”Coach Clark was very satisfied with how his team played and hopes they can maintain their good fundamentals in the future.“We finally put up some points and gave our defense an opportunity to rest,” Clark said. “When you can put up points, you play with more confidence. It evens out.”
