How to make the most of your time at Samo
Samo offers a large variety of extracurriculars and electives that are sure to keep any student busy. For freshmen trying to navigate high school, and even seniors wanting to try something new, there are many things to look forward to at Samo. From the music program, to sports, to clubs and more, there are many activities for students to get involved with that will make your time at Samo memorable. One of the exciting opportunities for students to take part in is the music program. Samo has many levels of orchestra, band and choir. Deciding to pick up a new instrument or begin choir while at Samo is no problem because introductory courses are offered. The music programs all have concerts multiple times a year, and most students would agree they are a fun experience for all.“The music program has immensely enhanced my high school experience,” member of the symphony orchestra, Sarah Ogata (’20) said. “I've made most of my friends from orchestra and band, because the top two orchestras play with the band. It feels like one big family. My favorite part is probably the big trips we go on. I get to become even closer with everyone, and they are definitely memories I will keep with me forever.”Participating in music allows one to connect with the other students who share a common passion, and enjoy their time spent together. In addition to music, sports are a fun activity for anyone at Samo. The games, whether home or away, are always a great experience for bonding with your teammates. Even if you don't play a sport, going to games, especially CIF playoffs, are entertaining because of the crowd’s energy.“Playing volleyball has taught me that it's really important to do things for others; not just yourself,” varsity volleyball player, Veronica Johnson (’18) said. “Like when we're doing a really hard workout or doing sprints, I push myself for the other girls and not just myself. My favorite part is probably watching my team be happy and celebrate after a big win, or consolidate together after a loss. It's all about the team all the time.”Another thing to look forward to at Samo are the many clubs offered. Clubs take place at lunch, and students are able to create a club of their own at the beginning of the school year if it is approved. Samo offers over 100 clubs. Finding the right club that suits a student's interests will keep them interested, rather than joining a club they are not passionate about. Clubs often times involve community service outside of Samo, which allows anyone to develop their passions and even discover new passions.H House Advisor Al Trundle suggests that students focus their classes and extracurriculars on their interests. Mr. Trundle points out that Samo offers many classes students might not be aware of.“If you’re a computer science person, we have a computer science class. Also, we have an AP Human Geography course that just started this year,” Trundle said.Besides taking part in the many activities available on campus, the school hosts many events for students to attend. Some of these events are pep rallies, homecoming and house events that students can help to plan with the house steering committees.Samo should be a great experience for every student. With the various classes, extracurriculars and events Samo has to offer, each student should be able to enjoy their time at Samo.
