Interesting people at Samo: Kole Lee
Samo is home to many interesting students with varying interests. Juliette Dana Vale (’20), Leo Gilman (’21), Eleanor Hutman (’20) and Kole Lee (’21) are four students who are passionate about their specific interests.Kole Lee (’21) has a love for magic which started when he was in fifth grade. His mom showed him a trick involving a coin and a bottle and he has been hooked ever since. “My favorite thing about magic is performing and seeing the reactions from people who I show a trick to,” Lee said. He plans to busk (perform) in Venice in the next few weeks once he gets his license. Right now, he is trying to improve his skills and perform in front of more crowds. “It’s just for the experience mostly. I want to get better and one of the hardest things in magic is to busk because you have to control the crowd while projecting your voice,” Lee said. Lee has been a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood for two years: a private magicians club that allows magicians to improve and perform for people. The club has one of the largest magic libraries in the world, where Lee occasionally goes to read in order to learn more magic secrets. He goes to the Magic Castle at least once a month to read, attend workshops and audition. At the workshops he gets critiqued and coached by other magicians. One of his goals is to perform at the Magic Castle for brunch in front of an invited audience. In order to reach this goal, he must continue to audition and develop. Another goal of his is to busk over the summer to gain more experience. Dai Vernon, a famous magician is his role model. Through Vernon’s books, Lee has learned how to hold and handle cards in order to create the best illusion possible. Lee is excited to learn new tricks and develop his style and looks forward to practicing magic as he grows older.
