Social media stars of Samo

In 2018, I think it’s safe to assume that every Samo student has a phone, and a large majority of them use some form of social media. Whether buying instagram followers, retweeting their favorite bands or even messaging their friends on MySpace (right..?), the majority of Samo students are active online. Some Samo students have been using Instagram specifically in unique ways to express themselves and their peers, and two accounts in particular have really stood out. @peopleofsamohi is a photography account, boasting a hefty 460 followers.  Comprised of candid photos, group shots and portraits, it showcases Samo students of all grades throughout the school day. Although the account was originally run anonymously, it was revealed on Sept. 3 that Alba Quintero (’19) runs the account. Quintero commented on the popularity of her account and what its aim was from the beginning.  “I started this account because I was really inspired by Nico Young’s (’17) work and Humans of New York and I thought it would be interesting to do something similar but with kids from Samo. My aim for the account was to picture what we looked like during our years of high school and to maybe connect the students and have people make new friends,” Quintero said.  Quintero continues to run the account to this day, and she’s motivated by the people she meets and inspires from this endeavor. @slumptgallery is also a photography account, although it captures teenagers and students in a different light. Whether napping on their desk in fourth period, sleeping on the bus on the way home or passed out at a party, you can find them all in @slumptgallery’s large collection of pictures. Started in February of 2016, the owners of the account have never taken the account as a serious photography venture, and they don’t want their fans to either. “There’s no aim for this. No goals, no nothing. Only a good laugh,” said one of the @slumptgallery owners. Although I don’t know who runs this account exactly, I can tell you that they do succeed in giving you a little chuckle while you scroll through your instagram feed. @slumptgallery is a place where people who might have partied a little too hard, or stayed up too late the night before can all been seen in a comedic, harmless way. They, like the @peopleofsamohi, are still posting consistently. Checking out both these accounts would give you candid views on student life, albeit one is a little more uncensored than the other.
