Boys Basketball reestablishes winning standards against Hawthorne
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Samo’s boys basketball team played Hawthorne High School and massacred them. The game ended with disheartened Hawthorne players and the 45 point deficit Samo beat them by; ending the game at, 72-27.As always, the boys came to win. From their Jordans to their shots, every play was coordinated and carried out perfectly. They ruled the first quarter with an 18-4 lead. Samo maintained that lead throughout the game. Their dominance only increased as time went on, starting with a lead of 14 and then 20. By halftime, they were winning 35-15.“I’m proud of the guys’ effort, I thought they played hard from start to finish,” Coach James Hecks said.After a performance from the Samo Songs team and halftime to recharge, the boys entered the second half even stronger. They gained eight points in the first two minutes and captivated their audience with climactic plays.Several newcomers to varsity scored well on the team. Players like Luke Economou (’20) and Ethan Berks (’20) were both responsible for several shots throughout the game.“We played within ourselves, stuck to our game plan and we played with joy to get the win,” Economou said.The boys finished out the third half with a score of 60-21, and sealed Hawthorne’s fate in the fourth.Each Samo player scored more than the last. The boys had Hawthorne struggling to keep up. “It was a great opportunity to get everyone in the game and on the court,” Hecks said.With fans screaming, families filming and a home-court advantage, the boys ended the game with a score of 72-21. When the buzzer blared, the boys all ran together into a sea of high-fives and kudos. “I was really proud of the way they supported each other, shared the ball with each other and just played for each other,” Hecks said.Tonight they took home another win under their belt, and finished out their first month of the season strong. However, the journey hasn’t stopped yet. With a rival-rematch on Friday, Senior night next week and CIF around the corner, Samo’s boys will continue their work to get better.
