Girls Basketball eases past Hawthorne
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Samo’s girls basketball took on Hawthorne High School. They were merciless and finished out the first month of their season strong. Samo killed Hawthorne, 64-25.After losing to their rivals a week ago, the Samo girls were out for blood. Samo decimated Hawthorne and ended the first quarter 13-0.Having a home-court advantage, Samo led the first half and played with succinct coordination.“The effort from the girls was a team effort-which is good. Everyone scored and I was really happy with the interior play; they played well and did a great job,” Coach Douglas Kim said.Throughout the second quarter, the girls remained united and gained 15 points; going into the last half with a score of, 28-14, a score they then doubled within the eight minutes of the third quarter. Hawthorne tried to keep up with Samo, making attempts at three-pointers and free throws, but the girls stayed solid. The third quarter ended at 44-18.As the game came down to its last five minutes, Samo sealed the deal. Varsity veteran Iternite Reed (’20), scored many points and helped the team win by nearly three times more. The game ended at 64-25.“I think we got really good leadership from Iternite the whole game. I think she played very well, I think she did really good things on the offensive and defensive sides,” Kim said.Although a win, and a significant one at that, Samo’s girls are focused on their future and where they can improve.“I feel that we could’ve done better and been more aggressive since they’re a slower team,” Danya Mahfouz (’18) said. The modesty and genuine passion for the sport is one of the things about Samo’s girls that makes them so talented. Their dedication is evident through their playing and makes them fan-favorites. “We can be very tough to beat. We had a good night; we were organized [and] patient, and I think that’s the key for us,” Kim said.Tonight they dominated. They played together, purposefully and as one. The girls now have their sights set on Friday and rematching Beverly with the same level of ferocity.
