Boys' volleyball attacks Culver
On Tuesday, March 6, boys’ volleyball beat Culver City High School in a quick and easy game lasting only three sets, despite four of the team’s six starters not playing. This made way for players who do not typically get as much playing time to contribute to the win. Aron Zakharin (’21) and Sam Kohn (’21) made their varsity debuts, both playing in all three sets. As the game progressed, Zakharin highlighted his hitting skills, strongly spiking every ball set to him by Kohn and clearly gained confidence with each play. “Playing on varsity felt really good. The team is strong, making it easier for me to play well. I think I did better later on in the game with my passing and hitting, but I do want to work on having a more aggressive serve,” Zakharin said. Unlike Zakharin, this was not the first varsity game for regular-starter Kane Schwengel (’20), and he demonstrated this with his veteran tricks. Whether it was making a spot-on pass off a serve or spiking the ball perfectly into the corner, Schwengel exhibited his skills with ease. “I think I did a good job stepping up as a leader since both captains weren’t playing and I was one of the only starters on the court. I feel pretty proud about the game because a lot of the starters were unable to play so we had a lot of bench players come in and they all played really well,” Schwengel said. The boys look forward to playing Lawndale in their next home game on Tuesday, March 12 and hope to continue their winning streak.
