Boys volleyball continues their winning streak
Samo boys volleyball continued their undefeated season so far with a win against Beverly Hills on Tuesday, Apr. 24. Samo kicked off the first set confident in their abilities, seeing that they obviously had the skill set to beat Beverly Hills. Once the game started, Samo served up multiple aces in a row to gain a substantial lead. Beverly Hills struggled to return the play and gave Samo several free balls, which ultimately resulted in kills from the strong offense. Samo didn’t let the fact that they were immensely ahead affect their playing, as they continued to push themselves to play as best as they can. After a quick set, Samo won 25-10. Although they won the first set, Samo players still wanted to improve as much they could in the upcoming sets.“We’ve been on and off our passing, that’s probably our biggest issue right now. We’re also working on establishing the middle,” player Trent Schroer (’20) said.Going into the second set, Samo was relaxed and confident in their abilities as they prepared for serve receive. After serving back and forth, Samo’s determination to play even better than they had previously got them a tremendous lead of 22-6. Hoping to stop Samo’s winning streak, Beverly Hills called a timeout at 23-6. After a few mistakes that gave Beverly Hills a couple points, Samo scored the final few points of the set to win 25-8.“We played alright. They have definitely improved since the last time we played them. We’ve been running the outside a lot, and they’ve been catching on,” Schroer said.Eager to win the game, Samo scored the first few points of the set to bring the score to 3-0. As Samo continued to serve tough, their offense was ready at all times for Beverly Hills to return the ball. Samo’s defense dug almost every ball that Beverly Hills hit with ease. With Samo in the lead at 13-5, Beverly Hills took yet another time out. Even though Samo’s players knew they were going to win, Samo pushed forward to score multiple aces and kills to win the set 25-12.“Jake Mitchell’s king setting helped us a lot. Our hitting improved a lot, especially the middle because we’ve been establishing the middle,” player Damien Hutchinson (’19) said. “I think we could have improved on our serving.”Head Coach Liane Sato plans to have her players learn from the experience to improve upon their skills for the tougher matches ahead. “Each practice we have specific goals we are working on to improve as a team. Every contact when we are in the gym is important. We have been improving every time we are in the gym,” head coach Sato said.
