Boys water polo splashes into CIF
After losing their third CIF game against South Pasadena High School, Samo’s varsity boys water polo team said goodbye to the season. The team took time to celebrate the best moments of the season.“I think we can all agree that beating El Segundo was the best moment of the season. Beside that, winning our 2nd round CIF game at San Juan Hills was super exciting. Their home crowd was humongous (and obnoxious), so it was a blast to be in such a lively atmosphere,” Koetters said.Looking back, the team was very proud of their achievements this season but did have some regrets.“We could have won [against South Pasadena] for sure,” team captain Sawyer Koetters (’19) said. “It was a close game.”Coach Matthew Flanders agreed with Koetters and felt that the team could also improve on some fundamental techniques and their overall team toughness. Despite that, he praised the boys’ efforts.“I think we are a more balanced team this year,” Flanders said.Instead of reminiscing, the boys choose to focus on their future seasons. “[I look forward to a] repeat of league championships and a CIF ring,” Flanders said.Koetters made some achievements himself in the league. He, along with a player from El Segundo High School’s team, held the status of most valuable player for this season. Flanders is also keeping up and coming players in his mind as he prepares for next year. Among these are Aaron Akhavan (’20) and Sebastian Zapatero (’19).
