Girls' basketball breezes by Hawthorne

On Friday Dec 13 the Samo girls’ basketball team bounced back from their slow start to league, demolishing Hawthorne by 36 points.Although Samo led the entire game, it began closely contested, with Hawthorne still in striking distance at the end of the first half. But, once the second half began Samo ran away with the game, never looking back. Once the team tightened up their full court press Samo quickly pulled away with a flurry of fast break points to eventually put them up by 20 at the end of the third and holding Hawthorne scoreless in the whole quarter.“In the second half I think everyone reset themselves and we started playing how we usually do and stopped playing down to them,” Siri Storstein (’20) said.Samo kept this defensive intensity throughout the rest of the second half, holding Hawthorne to scoring only five points in the whole half. The final score was 46-10. Even though the scoreboard reflected a successful game, the girls still hope to improve on their team chemistry.“I think that we have to continue working on playing like a team and uplifting each other even if we aren’t playing well,” Storstein said. The team is now looking to carry this momentum into their next league game against Lawndale on Jan. 9 against Lawndale. Come support the Vikings in their next home game on Jan. 16 against El Segundo.
