Girls golf ends season with winning streak

On Oct. 19, the Samo girls’ golf team wrapped up their fall season under the coaching of Kevin McKeown and guidance of captains Emily Goldman (’18) and Emily Dorsey (’18). They competed in a series of matches against other high schools every Tuesday at their home course at Rancho Golf Course, and Thursdays at the opposing schools’ courses. After their three months of vigorous practices and matches, the team ended their season with a record of 4-12. During their last four matches, the team accomplished a whopping four match winning streak. The team and their captains are proud of their success throughout the season and how they have grown as players. “The girls’ golf program has come a long way from when I joined,” Goldman said. “I started the team with four other girls, which was the minimum to play any game. We did not have team bags, away uniforms or even matching skirts. Today, we have eleven people, bags, two uniforms and we are more comfortable and competitive in the sport. I know the team will only continue to get better.” As well as celebrating the end of a victorious season, the seniors are reflecting on their involvement with golf throughout their high school years and reminiscing on the great memories they have made. For many of them it has been rewarding to be players on the team and they are glad that it has ended on a positive note.“My final season was more amazing than I could have ever expected, with many laughs and good times,” Dorsey said.In addition to the numerous high school competitions the team played in, three varsity players were invited to participate in CIFs on Oct. 18. Sarah Ogata (’20), Molly Sadler (’19) and Goldman all attended the competition and had the opportunity to compete at a higher and more challenging level of golf. “It was a memorable experience that tested my endurance,” Ogata said. “I had to golf in the beaming sun for five hours. On the first nine holes it was miserable, but on the back nine I recovered and lowered my score count.” Although their high school season of golf has ended, the Samo girls’ golf team is hoping to compete in the team division of CIFs to represent Samo. This would be the first time that they have done so and the players are looking forward to playing together again. Unlike the regular matches against other schools, CIFs is a longer course of 18 holes as opposed to nine holes. It is also more official and regulated, making the game more intense and treacherous. For now, the team is recovering from the rigorous season, and are taking time to relax and reflect.
