Girls golf loses a tough match

On Sept. 20, Samo’s Girls’ Golf team played against Redondo High School in a home match at the Penmar Golfing Range at 2:15 pm. This was their third match of the season, the first two being against Redondo and Torrance. Prior to the match, the teamed hoped to secure their first victory of the season, however the Samo girls could not outplay the highly ranked golfers at Redondo High School and their star, pro recruit player. Another advantage that Redondo had over the Samo girls was their much larger team size; Samo only had 7 participants on the team. The match began with a rocky start for many of the Samo girls, including Captain Molly Sadler (’19), but the girls stepped up their game as the match proceed.“We had a slight rough start, I know I did, but we pulled it together pretty well by the end of the match,” Sadler said.Despite their greatest efforts, the Samo Girls’ Golf team could not recover from the setback in the beginning of the match, resulting in their loss. Top scorers from this match were Sadler, Captain Karina Davanzo (’19), and Sarah Ogata (’20).For the golfers, competition and rivalry does not stir up conflict between Samo and Redondo. Contrarily, all the players are friends from other schools just enjoying a fun round of golf with one another. “My favorite thing about golf is the paradox between my opponents and I. Normally with other sports you have a prejudice against your opponents. Whereas in golf, I’m able to talk to them and get to know them on a more intimate level,” top scorer Ogata said. With analysis of this past match and detailing of technique, the Samo Girls’ Golf team are learning from their mistakes and practicing to accomplish their first big win.
