Girls' soccer looks to dominate

As fall sports begin to wrap up their seasons, the Samo community prepares to shift their attention to winter sports. Among these sports is the girls’ soccer program, which looks to display strong play on the field for the 2019-2020 season. The ’19-’20 varsity team consists of 19 players, with Cassidy Vancott (’22) as their primary goalie. Defender Bria Stocker (’20) and forward Samalah Seldon (’20) were recently crowned varsity co-captains for this season, with an additional captain to be chosen soon. Stocker and Seldon are excited to have this opportunity to lead the team and are hoping for a season filled with many victories.“This season I hope that, as talented individual players, we can connect and become a cohesive and dynamic team. We have incredible potential and with enough determination, we have what it takes to win CIF,” Stocker said. The ’18-’19 season held many great things for last year’s varsity team, including their biggest triumph: winning first place at the 2018 South Holiday Tournament. In this tournament, they faced higher level teams, including Palos Verdes, who they managed to beat 4-2 in the championship game. While they did not advance past the first CIF game last year, head coach Jimmy Chapman is pushing the girls to their limits this season in hopes of getting further this year.“We are building on the things we did well last year but with a new outlook and understanding that this season will inevitably have both highs and lows. Overall, we are aiming for consistency, game in and game out,” Chapman said.Going into this season, the team has a new slogan: “EMBRACE THE STRUGGLE. FOCUS ON THE GOAL.” The girls soccer program has high expectations for themselves this year and are eager to do well. They play their first home game on Samo’s football field against Mira Costa on Dec. 4 at 3:15 p.m.
