Girls volleyball destroys Hawthorne

On Friday, Sept. 14, Samo’s girls volleyball team took on Hawthorne in the North Gym. The fast-paced game seemed like no big deal to Samo’s players who effortlessly scored point after point. The game lasted three sets only, all in favor of Samo.Samo was quick to take the lead in the first set, with much help from Daina Monroe (’21) who powerfully spiked down any set that came her way from the inferior Hawthorne team.“The team wasn’t very competitive but we always try our best to have a little fun and work hard against any team we come across,” Monroe said.Hawthorne struggled to dig the tough spikes Samo hit at them, with the first set ending with a score of 25-6. It was clear to Samo’s fans in attendance that Hawthorne was not capable of measuring up to the skill level of our varsity team.Samo continued to play just as hard in the second set, gaining three points to Hawthorne’s zero almost immediately. Though Hawthorne managed to squeeze some in before the set’s end, Samo still stole set two with an impressive score of 25-10. Ella Dreibholz (’21) stood out to the excited onlookers with her incredibly strong outside hits, proving that practice really does pay off.“I think we stayed aggressive throughout the whole game. We worked on fixing things we have been working on in practice,” Dreibholz said.Practice seems to be key to the team’s success, with a third set that lasted less than 20 minutes. The game ended quickly and happily for Samo when the last set was concluded with a score almost unheard of: 25-3. Though some may argue Samo’s team was not fairly matched to Hawthorne’s, the girls never stopped working for their win. Georgia Fischer (’21) made it clear that no matter who they are playing, the team holds themselves to their highest standards.“Even when we play less challenging teams, we continue to work hard for every point and focus on our side of the court,” Fischer said. The girls are looking forward to putting their skills to work against the more challenging Beverly Hills High School girls varsity volleyball team at home on Thursday, Sept. 20.
