Samo tennis drops tough game to Culver City

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Samo girls’ tennis team played a tough Ocean League match against Culver City High School. It was closely-contested brawl, with the score nearly tied throughout. Culver City had very strong singles players and served as a good opponent for Samo’s dedicated Varsity players.  Right from the beginning of the match, the two Ocean League rivals went head-to-head. The first set played out with neither team able to obtain a decisive advantage. This led Samo’s head coach Wilston Poon to enter the second set without a clear picture if Samo would come out on top.  “We’re currently starting the second round and we’re tied with Culver… It could go either way right now. We might win, we might lose.,” Poon said. Samo continued to hold their own against the formidable Culver tennis squad; It wasn’t until the tail end of the match that Culver was able to pull away from Samo and win with a close score of 8-10. Evy Segal, (’22) one of Samo’s varsity players, was disappointed in her performance and losing her consecutive singles win streak, but was glad to see her teammates performing well. “I feel like [I was] really off my game today, I can’t believe I lost that singles game. I’m a little upset, but the rest of my team is doing well today which makes me hopeful,” Segal said. Coach Poon remarked that Varsity captain Geni Kapilonis (’20) played excellently, saying that she is always very determined on the court. Kapilonis’ determination shows through her strong ability and dedication to every match she plays. Her intense passion for tennis is very clear, and the rest of the team hopes to match this admirable intensity that Kapilonis demonstrates for the rest of their Ocean League games. Samo tennis plays their next match at Beverly Hills High School on Oct. 10.
