Photography III puts on an inspiring exhibit in the Roberts Art Gallery
On April 25, Samo hosted a photography exhibit featuring the works of three talented artists from the Photography II class. Each artist brought their unique perspective and artistic vision, resulting in a thought-provoking and visually stunning display that showcased a diverse range of styles and themes: natural beauty, the female form and an "operation" game-style tribute to a challenging year.
One of the artists, Colette Coriat (’23), spoke about her inspiration for her pieces, which featured graphic visuals evoking uncomfortable, but important, emotions.
“It was my senior year — and typically, that's supposed to be a very big and exciting year, but it’s one that I actually spent in a lot of emotional turmoil," Coriat said. "In my art, I tried to show the feeling of being in ‘limbo.’” Coriat said.
Although slightly unsettling, her work perfectly captures that feeling of being “in limbo” that she describes and does a wonderful job of projecting that tension and unease.
A second feature of the exhibit was the work of Owen Purcell (’23), who works with drones to capture nature from a different perspective.
“We’re used to seeing the world from one point of view," Purcell said. "With my work, I like to show the natural beauty of the world from both the ground and a birds-eye view.”
Purcell's work culminated into a well-shot and vast collection of photographs of snowy locations and places around Santa Monica.
Overall, the exhibit was a well put-together showcase of some of Samo's talented photographers, offering a variety of different styles and voices that left a lasting impression on all who attended.
