New Samo uniforms: cover that stomach!

Public school uniforms have become so common that they’re everywhere, all the way from tiny southern towns to the nation’s most populated cities. Now, they have finally stretched to Samohi.  After years of discussion about the subject, the SMMUSD Board of Education passed a new policy on March 21 for there to be a district-wide dress code.

In accordance with the new policy, Samo will pass out school-unique uniforms to each student in the upcoming month. As per Principal Antonio Shelton’s request, it will be modeled after his standard for student fashion— with just a little bit of change, that is.

“I wouldn’t expect the principal to have this kind of fashion sense. I’ve seen Shelton’s sweater vests, I’ve seen his khakis. But never would I expect him to have us in Boy Scout uniforms like this. Mad respect!” Anjalie Butte (’25) said.

For the men of Samo, their uniform will consist of the traditional dress of the men and boys in Scotland: Kilts. In the soggy bogs of Samo, trousers are impractical— for both health and practical reasons. Previously when men would venture up and down the Discovery stairs, they would find themselves tripping over the bottom hem of their pants. As a safety precaution, the men are required to wear kilts of any tartan pattern, with a tan uniform shirt tucked in. Ascots will be worn around the neck, the color based on the grade. White for seniors, blue for juniors, gray for sophomores and yellow for freshmen. With this attire, the men are also required to wear knee-high socks and loafers.

“Kind of grateful that Shelton made kilts part of the uniform because it’s really freeing for my legs. Before, these gams would feel all bunched up in my jeans but with a kilt though? I can finally feel the breeze. I’m a free man,” Matthew Thorson (’22) said.

For the women’s uniform, they are required to wear a neutral pleated skirt. For the same reason of tripping over themselves, it must be below the knee but still remain above mid-calf. They are also given the option of wearing a pleated dress with a collared shirt underneath. If they choose to opt-out on an underlayer, they are required to wear a long blazer, the color based on their grade, to cover their outfit to keep from showing their shoulders. If students find themselves heating up in the blazer, they can choose a sash that is akin to the Girl Scout’s version. With each club that they join, they will be given a pin to be added onto the sash or pocket of the blazer. For shoewear, women are required to wear patent Mary Jane shoes with white ankle socks, no exceptions. Enjoy!
