A Honeycrisp a day keeps the doctor away: apple tier list
Juliet Swimmer, Staff Writer
When ranking these apples, crispiness, sweetness, sour flavor profile and overall enjoyability were all taken into account. As a person who eats apples at least once a day, I was excited to take on this challenge.
Tier S: This tier reflects superior, better than all else, supreme, the absolute greatest. That would include the one and only Honeycrisp Apple. This crispy apple bears the perfect balance of sweet and savory, an emphatic, signature crunch and leaves you deeply satisfied.
Tier A: The A Tier encompasses good, not great. These apples, while delightful, will not leave you with a lingering smile or desiring more. The Envy Apple has recently been receiving more press and has grown significantly in popularity. Grown around Asia and Western Europe, this apple has a satisfying crunch and sweet flavor. However, the apple is less crispy than Honeycrisp and lacks sour notes.
Tier B: The epitome of mediocre; the Gala Apple. Slightly sweet and slightly tart, the Gala apple has minimal crisp but it wasn’t overly soft. Feelings were overall neutral towards this apple.
Tier C: A last resort. When desperation hits and the only apples in your bag are a Granny Smith and Fuji apple, they would suffice. In other circumstances free of desperation, these would not satisfy. Granny Smith Apples are far too tarte and leave a bitter aftertaste. Contrarily, Fuji Apples are far, far too sweet and lack depth in flavor. Both of the apples were mealy and free of any satisfying crunch.
Tier D: Should not be allowed in stores! The lackluster flavor of the Arkansas Black apple—not sweet or savory with a dissatisfying texture and almost matte taste drying out your mouth—was not pleasant.
