A very haunted Homecoming weekend

Sophie Salem, Staff Writer

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken so much away from high school students and now that we’re getting back in the swing of things, it was only appropriate for Samo to hold the first Homecoming dance in two years. From a professional DJ to a crowd-pleasing photo booth, Samo’s 2021 Homecoming dance on the night of Oct. 30 was the perfect approach to the ‘new’ year.

No one truly understands the amount of planning that goes on behind the scenes for a dance like this! For weeks, Samo has been planning and inspecting all the logistics to make it the perfect night. Samo’s ASB president, Kelsie Sabbe (’22), oversees the activities committee and profusely worked with them to make the Haunted Homecoming come to life.

“The planning process was similar to previous years, just with some limitations. For example, we weren’t able to hold the dance off-site or have catered food, and all outside guests had to be vaccinated,” Sabbe said.

Besides COVID-19 restrictions, the planning process was fairly normal in terms of brainstorming a theme and providing decorations. This year, homecoming took place in the Discovery atrium with a mob of balloons and colorful lighting. The DJ played all of your favorite hits and truly got the crowd dancing. Hundreds of students were up and dancing on the crowded dance floor, having the time of their lives.

This year, students were required to wear masks, but that didn’t take away from their fashion! It was clear that students were thrilled to dress formally for the first time, after many months of sweatpants and hoodies, as everyone had unique outfits of their own. There were elegant dresses of all kinds, as well as various tuxedos. And yes, it’s true, students matched their outfits to their masks! The most common; black masks with a sprinkle of your usual surgical masks here and there.

After over a year in quarantine, Samo’s Haunted Homecoming 2021 was an excellent touch to bring students back together again. Students bonded, danced and partied all night long.
