Casino Homecoming night brings Vegas to Santa Monica

For many Samo students, Homecoming was a night to remember. As you entered through the Seventh and Michigan gate as rain fell from the sky, big block letters spelling ‘HOCO 2022’ towered over the steep stairs of the Discovery Building and hanging lights set the tone for this year's theme, Casino Night.

With the Homecoming Dance making a return to the Discovery Atrium for the second year, this time there was a new addition of food options. Students had access to free food from gourmet food trucks in the Innovation quad and catered Chick-Fil-A and Domino's Pizza was served in the cafeteria.

This year the mosh pits and crowds got extremely hectic and out of control with water being thrown from every direction. People were partying so hard that many students fell down like dominos. The DJ also was open to taking requests from students which made the event more enjoyable. Elijah Boktor ('23) rates his experience at Homecoming.

“This Hoco was lowkey a movie. The whole school was getting lit together. The ticket price was definitely worth it because of the 20 pizza boxes we snagged. The DJ was pretty fire and crowd surfing was lit until the opps shut it down,“ Boktor said.

Homecoming was also a night where many people danced and had fun with students in different grades. This inclusivity made the event much better than it already was.  ASB President Nathan Castanaza (‘23)  describes the process of setup and the ideas behind the memorable night.

In ASB we ensured the event was well publicized and our activities commissioner ordered all decorations, coordinated backdrop and larger decorations through PegLeg, and the DJ," Castanaza said.

Spending time with friends, classmates and peers in a nice environment with good food and music can allow Samo students to make amazing memories and have fun despite the stressful times in high school. Administration and ASB members such as Castanaza are hopeful for future Samo events after this year’s positive Homecoming turnout.

“Homecoming was very successful this year. I was very pleased to hear that we sold over 1300 tickets and broke the school record,” Castanaza said.
